Topper-Lyn Kennels

Lynda L Kieres:    A native of Montana with roots dating back to the gold rush of the 1860’s, Lynda has over 30 years of training experience.  With a deep belief in diversifying, she has neither limited herself to one type of dog nor one philosophy.  While focusing on the versatile hunting breeds, she has also worked with working-cattle, retrieving, and assistance dogs.

“My dog training days have been some of the best days of my life.  Along with the versatile hunting dogs — I have also enjoyed opportunities to work with seeing-eye and assistance dogs, which has been very rewarding and challenging.”

Mentoring under world-renowned trainer Sigbot “Bodo” Winterhelt, Lynda was there in the early years of the still newly formed North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA).  As founder and first president of NAVHDA’s Big Sky Chapter, she coordinated and held field tests as well as served as an apprentice judge.

“Being an apprentice judge allowed me the opportunity to travel the country and see some wonderful dogs and develop a deep appreciation of the capabilities of the versatile hunting dog.”

With the development of her dogs and training always her prime directive, Lynda has attended numerous training seminars as well as traveling to Germany in 1981 to work alongside trainers abroad to gain an even better understanding of the true capabilities of versatile hunting dogs.

While having great success in the field, Lynda was quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the show ring as well.  Her American Brittany, Suzabob’s Hun Harrasser, was a highly distinguished show champion in both the US and Canada.

Once again on the forefront of organizational development, Lynda has served as the Secretary of the French Brittany Gun Dog Association and Show Chairman and Event Chairman.  She served for 3 years as the Show Secretary for the National Specialty Show.  These key positions were held at a time when the breed (Epagneul Breton) was recognized by the United Kennel Club as a separate breed from the American Brittany.  The development of future events will help shape the future of the breed and recognition of domestic champions both in the field and show ring.  Lynda also served as the President of the Big Sky Epagneul Breton Gundog Club, a Regional Chapter of the F.B.G.D.A.  She was the Montana field representative for Paws With A Cause for four years, a non-profit organization that provides assistance dogs to those in need.

Lynda also holds a 9-5 job as a Contracting Officer of a local US Government agency, with a career extending over 20 years.   Lynda is also a UKC Field Trial judge.

“Throughout my life I have had the opportunity to work with some amazing dogs and wonderful trainers.  My hope is that with the new domestic development of the French Brittany that I will have continuing opportunities to aid, in any way, the forward progress of the breed without making concessions to the high standard of the Breton and that the FBGDA has worked so hard to develop.”

Christopher L. KieresChris has always had a deep affection for dogs.  While still in high school he raised and trained his first Australian Cattledog "Justice Tuff" to work a variety of livestock, including horses, cattle and even buffalo.  Chris and "Tuffy" were a working team, no matter how difficult the situation.

After completing a successful stint in the U.S. Marine Corps, Chris approached his Mom, Lynda, with the idea of "getting back into the hunting dogs."  His enthusiasm for outdoor sports, and in particular hunting, made this a natural progression.  Together, he and Lynda  acquired their first Bretons in 1998.

In the spring of 2002 Chris bred his first litter and selected "Trinite" to be his personal hunting dog.  At a very early age "Trin" quickly became the ultimate hunting companion and proved himself in both the field (NAVHDA Natural Ability and UKC Liberated Bird Trial) as well as in the show ring.  Trin earned multiple show placements, his Grand Champion Title, and was Best in Show out of a field of 109 dogs at a UKC Multi-Breed Show in Washington. . . .

In 2004 Chris acquired Winterhelle’s Strike from renowned breeder and founder of the PCNA, Sigbot “Bodo” Winterhelt.  Chris’ Mom had several Pudelpointers over the years and Chris decided it was time for him to move up the ranks to this exceptional breed.  Strike has proven to be everything a Pudelpointer is (and should be) – on one hand a challenge and at the same time an outstanding performer in the field and companion.  At one year of age Strike demonstrated his true abilities while hunting at Medicine Lake, MT with a total of ten finds in one day, steady to wing and shot, and a spectacular track of a wounded pheasant that left all the gunners slack-jawed with amazement.  He then topped the day off with a successful retrieve of a duck.  For more information on this unique breed please visit the Pudelpointer Club of North America website.

Chris also decided he had a deeper interest in the judging aspect of the events.  He has been actively involved in the Apprentice Judge Program of NAVHDA, following in his Mom's footsteps and is a UKC Field Trial Judge.
