2006 News

September 10, 2006 – Boise, Id

Destinée de l’Hospitalier made history for the second time by successfully completing the second round of JGHV testing by achieving a score of 168 points in the Herbstzuchtprüfung (HZP), Fall Breeding Test, sponsored by the JGV-USA.  Once again Desi was the second highest scoring dog of the day.  The Senior Judge affectionately referred to her as “The Rocket Child” throughout the day as the little dog zipped merrily around the field, completing the various tasks with her typical enthusiasm and Breton style – slamming on to two very impressive points [earning a score of 11 in pointing out of a possible 12].  The air was significantly low on oxygen as breaths were held by the gallery as the little dog disappeared over the hill on her ¼ mile rabbit drag track.  The collective sigh was audible when she reappeared with the 3 pound rabbit.  Judge Joe Kelly teased later, “I can’t believe that the littlest dog had the BIGGEST rabbit.”  She moved on to the water work (Blind Retrieve and Search Behind the Live Duck) and was able to successfully complete those tasks as well, retrieving both of the full-sized mallards.  Again the judge commented on how big the mallards looked as they were retrieved by “such a little dog” (as compared to the other dogs who were all Deutsch Drahthaar).  The size of the ducks didn’t seem to faze Desi though.  She demonstrated that she is “sight loud” on ducks as well as fur as she enthusiastically produced the duck.  We are very proud that Desi has represented the Epagneul Breton so well in the JGHV venue in North America.

Gunderson’s Pride and Joy

Glen Gunderson and Ann Johnson are pretty much on Cloud Nine these days after a very busy summer with their pups CH TopperLyn Fontay Azure Bo [NBOB GRCH TAN Beau de l’Hospitalier x CH TAN Sapphyre Noir du TopperLyn] and TopperLyn Gallant Bodacious (AKA “Leo”) [NBOB GRCH TAN Beau de l’Hospitalier x CH TopperLyn Sierra de l’Escarbot].

It all started in June at the UKC Premier where Azure stepped out of the ring with a Best Female award at 10 months of age (Leo was not 6 months old yet so he just went along for the ride).  In July Azure picked up two more Best Female awards.  August called for a break in the show circuit and they were off to the Midwest Tri-States Chapter of NAVHDA in South Dakota where both pups ran in the Natural Ability Test.  At the end of the day Glen and Ann proudly received a perfect score of 112 points Prize I for Azure and a highly respectable 102 points Prize II for Leo (who was a mere 7.5 months old at the time).

Early September it was back to the show ring where both Azure and Leo walked away with two Best of Winners each and Leo added a Best of Breed and Gundog Group 2nd (out of six breeds) at a WHOPPING old age of not quite 8 months.  Then it was back on the road again to the UKC Liberated Bird Trial in Montana sponsored by the Big Sky Epagneul Breton Gundog Club.  The first day was marred by heavy rain and cold as none of the 17 dogs entered was able to successfully complete the tasks.  However, on Sunday you could tell by the grins on the faces of Handler (and Spouse), the Judge, Gunners, and Gallery that something special had happened in the Gundog Stake.  The “Little Dog That Could” amazed everyone (except probably Glen and Ann who KNEW he could do it) with a perfect run and was steady to wing and shot and delivered the bird perfectly to hand.  I’m glad there was an EMT present as I thought that someone might need CPR (like maybe ME) when it was announced that Leo had earned the FIRST PLACE award in the Gundog Stake – at the age of 8 months and 4 days.

FBGDA National Specialty Field Trial and Conformation Show

Due to a lack of preparation time, we did not run any dogs in the field trial for the first time since its inception.  We did however have three entered in the conformation show.  Under UKC judge Richard "Rowdy" Yates, TopperLyn D'Artagnan started the day in the junior male class, by days end he was Reserve Best Male, bested only by Cliathan Mighty McSmith, this years National Best of Breed.  His littermate CH TopperLyn Draco Malfoy, bested their sire NBOB CH TAN Beau de l'Hospitalier in the Champion class going on to compete for Best of Breed

March 24,2006- Boise, Id

Destinee de l'Hospitalier made her small mark in history by becoming the first Epagneul Breton to successfully complete the VerbandsJugendPrufung (VJP) in North America.  This is a test utilized by the Jagdgebrauchshundverband (JGHV) to test a puppy's aptitude in the field.  The test consists of a gun sensitivity test, field search and bird work, and a track of wild hares.  She ran in a field of 5 dogs, including 4 Deutch Drathaar.  She received 70 pts and was the second highest scoring dog of the day.  During the hare tracking, she worked three rabbits, and on the third, found the rabbit and initiated a chase being marked 'Sichtlaut' or sight loud, an important step in the German testing.  Dogs being tested in this format may not perform the blood track required in the VGP (Utility Test), until they are graded as being either sight or scent loud on hare.  She will now begin her work for the (HZP) - fall breeding test.  For more information on this demanding test format visit our friends at jgv-usa.org  .  The Jagdgebrauchshundverine (JGV-USA) is a North American chapter operating under the auspice of the JGHV, an FCI recognized organization.  Dogs must have a FCI recognized pedigree to participate in these tests.
